Deacons
A good place in the Bible to consider the role of a deacon is in Acts 6:1-6. The elders’ role of praying and ministering the word is contrasted with the need to handle the physical and logistical needs of the growing church, which is something that the newly-appointed deacons take care of. It is also noteworthy to read how these chosen deacons are described: “well-respected and full of the Spirit and wisdom” (Acts 6:3). Stephan, in particular is seen as a man “full of faith and the Holy Spirit”. Of the biblical characteristics that Paul mentions in 1 Timothy 3:10 is also worth noting: “ Before they are appointed as deacons, let them be closely examined. If they pass the test, then let them serve as deacons.” (Acts 6:5).
So deacons are people who have a good reputation, have been tried and tested in ministry roles, can make wise decisions and are full of the Holy Spirit. They are spiritually-minded. Their role consists primarily of handling the physical and logistical needs of the church and so they will need to have a heart for the people of the church. Their role also involves listening and dealing with these needs. At the International Baptist Church of Hamburg, we also see the deacon’s role as implementing the spiritual course or direction that the elders set for the church.
